When Your Business Grows By Opportunity Vs. Vision
Imagine trying to decide on your tactics if you’ve got no vision established. Something about “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there.”⠀
When your business grows, opportunity by opportunity, with no real attention to an overall vision, you’ll end up with a Lego box full of random pieces that will only ever make a lopsided house with half a roof.
(Can you tell I was just helping my son clean his room?)
It’s not uncommon for entrepreneurs to start their journeys pinballing from one low-hanging fruit to another. It’s how we learn, adjust and figure our sh*t out. All good.
But at some point in time, it becomes necessary to pull all that together and figure out what this business is trying to do – who it’s for, what it needs to provide for you and your customers, where it’s going, etc. – because that direction is what pulls everything else into alignment.
We all know how many options we have for every decision we try to make. It can be, and usually is, so overwhelming. Which channel to focus on for my marketing efforts? Which opt-in to lead my funnel? Where to look for new and productive relationships.
Imagine trying to decide on your tactics if you’ve got no vision established. Something about “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there.”
But how about differentiating yourself from the crowds? How can you know what your unfair advantage is if you’re serving anyone and everyone with whatever they want?
When everything feels like it just doesn’t quite fit, it’s time to step back and get clear on a few things:
What does this business need to do for you? What does this business need to do for your customers?
Who is really, truly going to benefit from that vision?
Who is going to support that vision?
What kind of impact do you really want to make?
What absolutely needs to be present in your business in order for it to get your full attention and energy?
Getting clear on all these things means you can get clear on how you execute, and start growing intentionally, minimizing distractions (because there will always be cat videos) and minimize waste in time.
Tell me in the comments…
Are you still growing by opportunity, or have you gotten clear and aligned with your vision?
