Doing Nothing Often Leads To The Very Best Something

When our whole lives are built on change, we expect change to happen constantly in order for things to feel normal.

“Doing nothing often leads to the very best something.” Winnie the Pooh

I recently went to see Christopher Robin with my kids. Being a lifelong fan of Winnie the Pooh (I was a collector of the Classic artwork), I was so enamoured with the characters and the way they brought the old artistic style through.

That little bear is full of simple wisdom and I found myself musing over this quote, and of course reflecting on how it applies to business.

Normally, I’m the cheerleader for taking constant action. I know how doing the work leads to breakthroughs and clarity.

But sometimes… when things aren’t so clear and you’re feeling really overwhelmed and undecided, sometimes the best thing you can do is create space and do nothing.

Have you ever gotten so worked up over something that you start doing all sorts of ridiculous things just to try and move it along and out of your head? Yeah, that’s what I’m talking about.

Let that tornado subside, and give yourself time and space. Your brain also works better when it’s not on high alert. Keeping your body and your mind still is the best way to reach inspiration and creative thought.

There’s a temptation for us as entrepreneurs to try and tackle everything head on. We batch our tasks and expect to get through them in the time we allocated because we don’t have time to be confused, or unclear, or frustrated or uneasy.

When our whole lives are built on change, we expect change to happen constantly in order for things to feel normal.

So, then, leaving something unfinished, undecided, unclear is so uncomfortable. But – it will help. Sounds crazy, but it’s true.

You’ll know it when it’s the right thing to do… when you can feel the friction in your body and how uneasy you feel with whatever solution you’re thinking might help. When everything feels anxious, then that’s the time to channel your inner Pooh.

So do what Pooh does. Sit on a log in the middle of the forest in a red shirt with no pants, and stare into the sun setting over the glen, and do absolutely nothing.

The very best something is waiting just across the clearing.⠀

Tell me in the comments…

How will you channel your inner Pooh?
