“I finally realized I’ve been exactly what I tell my clients not to be”

“I finally realized I’ve been exactly what I tell my clients not to be”

If we’re so good at our zone of genius, how do we miss it with ourselves? Or are we just too busy making everyone else happy that our own stuff takes a back burner?

“I finally realized I’ve been exactly what I tell my clients not to be”

Isn’t that the worst/best? Those glimpses in the mirror when you realize you’re not eating your own dog food?

It’s funny… we’re all experts in our own right. We all know something really really well. But, more times than I can count, my clients have actually not done that very thing for themselves.

The branding expert who can’t figure out her own positioning.

The designer whose site is still lost in the ‘90s.

The bookkeeper who is months behind in her expenses.

If we’re so good at our zone of genius, how do we miss it with ourselves? Or are we just too busy making everyone else happy that our own stuff takes a back burner?

Not exactly. I think we actually suffer from being too close to our own deal. It’s like watching a 60” TV from a foot away. We’ll see the colours and the movement but rarely the overall image.

We see bits and pieces but we’ve got tunnel vision.

The client quoted above had been toiling away on a business that just didn’t seem to stick. She’d convinced herself of a direction that wasn’t going anywhere. When I pointed out what kind of business she was presenting she suddenly had the revelation that she was doing exactly the opposite of what she advised her clients to do.

It took someone on the outside shining a mirror in for her to see that for herself.

People often ask me what a business strategist or coach does.

We shine light in places that have been in shadows forever.

We connect seemingly disparate parts together to create a new and cohesive whole.

We teach, we create habits.

We solve problems that seemed impossible.

We design from patterns and proof.

Have you worked with a coach before? I have and I do.

I collect as many eyes as I can on my work, so those mirrors can be held up for me to see all unsightly bits and things that are out of place.
