I’m a Business Coach, But I’m Not Promising Massive Profits
So in a land of fast action and sparklepreneurs, I’m gonna stay over here with my rolled up sleeves and my spreadsheets waiting for you guys who want to actually get things done.
No, I’m not going to promise you massive profits.
Four years ago, I knew I had to put a stake in the ground and call myself what I really was.
But I couldn’t.
The thought of calling myself a coach made me writhe.
No, I didn’t have mindset issues about owning my worth.
What made this so uncomfortable was that I’d experienced firsthand a number of “business coaches” and listened to them talk to their clients and I literally was dumbfounded.
Not only had these “coaches” never run a business before but the advice they were giving their clients was not only unhelpful but downright misleading.
I became disenfranchised with the idea of business coaching and struggled to position myself in the market. You see, there is no barrier to entry. No certification, no governing body, no standards board to ensure everyone who uses the title had at least a modicum of experience that indicated they could help their clients. Heck, who even knew if I was qualified?
And worse, these coaches didn’t even know what they didn’t know.
Today, sadly, things have gotten even worse. Not only is there no bar for quality but everyone and their dog calls themselves a business coach. Today I listened to a marketing guy tell a whole room full of people that “everyone should be a business coach”. No wonder everyone is getting mixed results!
I stewed today for a couple of hours and talked to some awesome coaches in my group, and finally stepped out of my funk, realizing I can’t control what happens around me, but I can decide what I stand for:
I’m never going to promise you things that no one can but yourself (including 6 figures, massive profits, huge sales)
I will not sell my services with my body parts or sexy lifestyle (as if I could!)
My story will never be more important than the story of my customer
Even if “coaching” is supposed to be asking all questions, I’m still going to give you direction and guidance because I know that’s what you want
Money is only one part of success

What do you stand for?
