“It was an a-ha’s and lightbulbs kind of day today!”

You know when you work really effing hard at something and you can actually feel it, physically? Even though it’s all mental work?

Sometimes my strategy calls feel like that, like I’m getting a really good workout upstairs in that soft, gushy brain matter.

I know my clients feel it too. I liken it to plodding through quicksand with jungle vines swinging at you from every direction while you’re fighting to gain some ground.

Those days that I go into battle with a tough problem, are also the days I feel most victorious.

In this particular instance, we were stepping in to a really undefined problem. This wasn’t a “I’m not sure who my target client really is” or a “I want to help baby seals but can’t figure out how”. This was just “something’s not working and I just don’t know what.”

These are always the tough ones, particularly when the business owner is already pretty business savvy herself.

But we did it. We gained ground. We shone some light in shadows where the real troubles were lurking, making themselves unseen.

It’s days like this that I love my framework. It just works for drawing out all the pieces that need to be free.

Someone asked me yesterday if I could just build a training program to teach people the same framework. Maybe? But I also know how much of my success comes from plain experience – the scars and battles and forehead thumping lessons.

And that’s why my client chose me to help bring her into the light. She knew that sometimes we all need another set of eyes, another perspective. When all we see is a blur of questions, a peer can help see through all the muck.

I remember the moment when the lightbulbs started going off. She smacked her forehead and said “There it is! Right there in front of me!” (Sound familiar, Heather Craik?) And that’s often right where it is – at our feet.

Tell me in the comments…

What lightbulbs have gone off for you lately? Did you see them coming or was it a forehead-slapping bolt of recognition out of nowhere?
