Listen. Listen In All The Ways You Can. Listen To Yourself.
If there is one skill that’s going to make you level up, it’s your ability to listen.
Listen. Listen in all the ways you can.
Listen to what’s being said and what’s not being said. Listen to yourself.
If there is one skill that’s going to make you level up, it’s your ability to listen. To relax and stop trying to manage the conversation, and to hear the things your people are saying with and without words.
When you’re clear on what you’re aiming for, you can start listening with context.
For example, if your vision is to create a the best pajamas for cold nights, you want to know what is and isn’t working for your customers.
Rather than ask them outright, or give them a survey, start having conversations and ask for stories about cold nights. Tell your own stories for inspiration and listen to theirs. Buried in those stories are the real things they yearn for.
Maybe they tell you how they had a pair of long johns but they were so itchy they took them off, or how they had trouble taking them off at night for a bio break because the cuffs were too tight.
Maybe they have a story about how their partner steals all the covers, so you know you need to design for extra cold, cover-less temperatures.
Every day I have conversations and I listen hard, because every conversation has some nugget in it that helps me do my job better, understand my customers better, create new content that will resonate, add new modules to my program, tweak an offer or find my potential clients.
When I get an email from a customer, I read it twice. Once so I know what they are asking for, and twice so I know what they need. My response then becomes so much more resonant because I listened and they were delighted to be heard.
Keep an ideas notebook beside your desk. Listen all the time for comments, words, stories, and challenges that your community relays. Write them down and use this as your growth register – all the places you can keep leveling up your work and your communication so you land squarely in the place that your customers need you to be.⠀
