Why I Want You to Put Yourself First (Really)

This is YOUR business, and if you don’t get clear on why you’re running it, there’s an amazingly strong chance you’re running one that doesn’t align with what you set out to create.

Why I Want You to Put Yourself First

I want you to put yourself first in your business. Why not put clients first? I’ll tell you why not.

Most of my days are spent designing or transforming businesses (and business owners). My clients look to me to help them figure out why they’re not making enough, or why their clients won’t buy, or why they feel crappy about their business, even though this was their dream.

While there are many, many reasons that they may be in the position they are, when we strip back the layers and start right at the beginning, they are shocked when I ask them what their business needs to do for them.

“Don’t you mean ‘What does it need to do for my customers?’”

“No, I want to know what it needs to do for you.”

They often have to take a minute to think because they’ve never even asked themselves that. Your business is supposed to be about your customers, right? Well, your services are, or your product is. But this is YOUR business, and if you don’t get clear on why you’re running it, there’s an amazingly strong chance you’re running one that doesn’t align with what you set out to create.

Here’s the example I love to use:

Let’s say your vision is that every baby goat has pajamas.

So, what kind of business would you build?

I bet your first answer is “I would make baby goat pajamas!”.

Yes, that will fulfill your vision. But what if you hate sewing? Or you don’t want to make products? Or that would require travelling, and dealing with people, both which you detest.

Maybe what you really want is to work 1:1 with people, and use skills you already have as, say, a litigator. And you want to write.

So, then, you could be a lobbyist for baby goats to ensure their pajamas are legislated. Now, this business meets your needs and still fulfills your vision.

What happens then, when you have put yourself first in your business? You find boundless energy, eliminate friction and love your clients, which makes them love you back.

Building a friction-free business means you have to put yourself first. Hands down.

Tell me in the comments…

Have you put yourself first? Tell me how!
